Lastly, I would try to donate my own blood. If I felt too weak to donate, I would encourage my surgeon to let me have a transfusion after the operation, if I were anemic. There are risks involved in receiving blood from the blood bank but they are minimal. I would be willing to take these risks since I believe that the anemia slowed my recovery more than any other single factor, including my fibromyalgia and hypoglycemia.

If you are considering hip surgery, some of my suggestions may not apply to you. You probably do not have fibromyalgia or low blood sugar. You may do very well on the patient controlled pain pump. Many people do. You might have a high tolerance for oral medications, in which case Percocet or Vicodin may not give you adverse side effects. It is likely that your surgeon will place you in anti-embolism stockings right away and if you have donated your own blood, the doctor is not apt to withhold a transfusion. However, you may have other health issues, such as diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, or other arthritic joints. Simply being aware that hip surgery can result in pain, swelling, and weakness from blood loss will help you after the operation because you will want to do everything in your power to prevent and control these problems.
